Kitchen Drain Clogs in Eden Prairie
Most kitchen clogs come from grease and food scraps building up in the sink drain, and they often show up as a backed-up sink, a stuck disposal, or dishwasher water rising in the basin. Here is what to do now and what a plumber will check.

Do this right now
- Turn off the dishwasher and stop running the faucet so the sink does not overflow.
- If the disposal hums but will not spin, switch it off at the wall switch. Never put your hand inside; unplug it or turn off its breaker before checking anything.
- Do not pour boiling water into a sink full of standing water, especially with PVC drain pipe. It will not clear grease far down the line.
- Skip chemical drain cleaners. If they do not work, you are left with caustic water in the sink and a riskier job for the plumber.
- Check other drains. If a basement floor drain or lower bathroom is also backing up, treat it as a main line problem.
Why kitchen drains clog
Grease, oil and fat are liquid when hot but cool and harden on the pipe walls as they travel down. Each layer catches food scraps and coffee grounds, and over months the pipe narrows until water cannot keep up.
Starchy foods like rice, pasta and potato peels make it worse by swelling into a paste. Eggshells and fibrous scraps such as celery and onion skins can also wrap around disposal blades and collect in the trap.
Garbage disposal problems
A disposal that hums without spinning is usually jammed by something hard. Many units have a reset button on the bottom and a hex socket underneath for a wrench to free the blades. Only try this with the power off.
If the disposal runs but the sink still will not drain, the clog is past the disposal in the trap or the wall line. A disposal grinds food into smaller pieces, but those pieces can still settle and build up, so heavy disposal use does not prevent clogs.
When the dishwasher backs up
Most dishwashers drain through the same pipe as the kitchen sink, often through the disposal. If the sink drain is partly clogged, dishwasher water has nowhere to go and shows up in the sink or stays in the bottom of the dishwasher.
Before calling, check the dishwasher filter, which many models have in the bottom of the tub. If you recently installed a new disposal, make sure the knockout plug for the dishwasher inlet was removed; it is a common cause of a new backup.
What a plumber will do
A plumber will usually start by pulling and cleaning the trap under the sink, then run a cable through the wall line to reach grease buildup further down. In homes where the kitchen sits far from the main stack, that line can be long.
If the kitchen line clogs repeatedly, they may recommend hydro jetting to clean grease off the pipe walls, or a camera inspection to check for a sag that collects waste. A local plumber serving Eden Prairie will explain what they found and quote any extra work first.
Keeping the kitchen line clear
Pour cooled grease into a can or jar and throw it in the trash instead of down the sink. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them.
Scrape plates into the trash or compost, use a sink strainer, and run plenty of cold water when the disposal is on. If your sink starts draining slower than usual, get it looked at before a busy cooking day rather than during one.
Common questions
Why is water coming up in my kitchen sink when I run the dishwasher?
The shared drain line is partly blocked, so the dishwasher's discharge backs up into the sink. Clearing the kitchen drain line usually fixes both.
Is it safe to use a plunger on a sink with a disposal?
A sink plunger can help with a simple clog. Turn the disposal off, and if you have a double sink, block the other drain so pressure goes toward the clog. Never plunge after using chemical cleaners.
Does hot water and dish soap clear grease?
It can help a little with a slow drain, but it will not clear hardened grease deep in the line. Grease cools and resettles further down, which is why kitchen clogs often return.
Should I replace my garbage disposal if the sink keeps clogging?
Not necessarily. Repeat clogs are usually in the drain line, not the disposal. Have the line cleared and checked first; replace the disposal only if it is leaking, failing, or jamming constantly.
